The Following excerpt comes from Loving Leonardo - The Quest. But first, Loving Leonardo's trailer to start you off on the story:

Setting the stage:
Up to this point, Nicolas has been plagued by disturbing dreams. His subconscious mind is telling him something isn't quite right. Now in Paris hunting for Leonardo da Vinci's clues, Nicolas, Ellie, and Luca take in the City of Lights determined to make the most of their adventure. They stop to have their fortunes read. Shortly after, Nicolas receives a fateful telegram.

After wine, we moved on to explore the famous Parisian Catacombs. The long-abandoned stone quarry’s underground chambers now held an ossuary with the remains of several million people stacked in a freakishly grotesque collage of bone. As dinner was some hours away, we bought ourselves several portable foods from the abundant street vendors and took ourselves to the Eiffel Tower’s top viewing platform. High above the city, the early November breeze left little doubt winter was coming. We weren’t long up there.

“My goodness, the day has turned cold.” Ellie plucked a hot chestnut from the paper cone and passed the nugget of warmth from one kid-gloved hand to the other.

“Would you rather we return to our suite?”

Laughing, she shook her head and swept a hand to the untidy wall of plastered playbills for the various happenings around the city. “And miss all this?”

Luca popped a peeled chestnut into his mouth. His words steamed as he read a bill plastered to a wall, Axël: A drama by Auguste Villiers.

I knew Ellie enjoyed reading of seductive and sexually attractive heroes. While I hadn’t attended any Villiers theater pieces myself, I had once read a commentary in the London Times suggesting he created Byronic heroes in his works. I took out my pocket watch and checked the time. “The play begins in approximately twenty minutes. We could warm ourselves there, and then return to the hotel for dinner.” I raised a brow to Ellie. “Care to take in a play, love?”

“What a marvelous idea!”

***

We left the theater an hour later. What a mistake that had been. While the play was entertaining and the theme interesting enough, with its occult undertones, the ending had left a bad taste in my mouth. After finding their treasure, Axël the hero and his heroine Sara fall in love, and then decide their dream is far too magnificent to be fulfilled in the unimaginative reality of their lives. With no dream to live for, they killed themselves as the sun rose and the curtain fell.

Apparently unfazed, my companions discussed the story at length as we walked back to the hotel. I couldn’t help but draw a parallel to our lives, although I was certain the dark thoughts were mine alone. It didn’t help that we passed a mortician’s window with the latest embalming on display as a macabre advertisement to the skill to be had there. Beside the door, a glass frame was filled with memento mori photographs. In general I found the practice of posing the dead in life-like attitudes a disturbing one. Especially the staring facsimile eyes painted upon closed lids.

Seeking a distraction from my thoughts, I used the tip of Eiffel’s tower as a guide and led us across the street and down an alley. We passed a beribboned one-man music show reminiscent of a May Day mummer, a raucous game of Three Card Monte taking place on an upturned dustbin, and Luca received a blatant sexual proposition by a ponce seeking work for his whore. Turning the corner, we chanced upon two women, one young and the other quite old or quite world-worn. Both were obviously Roma, dressed as they were in colorful rustic clothing one might see on country folk. The younger woman rocked a baby. The elder told us in heavily-accented English that her tarot cards held a message for Luca and me.

Unused to gypsies who peddled their wares across Europe, Ellie was enchanted by the idea. She tugged on my sleeve and encouraged a card reading. Luca shrugged and I found myself placing a coin on the scarf-covered folding table.

The elder’s smile revealed several missing teeth. She shuffled her worn cards and said, “The cards speak to you first, Englishman.” These she handed to me and I cut the deck into three piles as directed. I realized then that this deck of cards was not only quite old, it was hand-painted. Restacking them into her hand, she dealt three cards — the three of cups, the six of swords, and the five of pentacles. I looked at the woman expectantly.

I felt Ellie’s eyes on me.

“Well madam, what do the cards say?”

“The cards call for caution, Englishman.” She tapped the three of cups with a gnarled finger. “You’ve gained fortune in love. But this card is your past.”

Ellie looped her arm through mine. I could feel her thoughts. As far as she and I were concerned, it was our present and future.

The old woman tapped the six of swords. “Your plans will be postponed and sadly there is nothing to be done for it.” She stared at the cards a moment then tsked. She shook her head and tapped the last. “The card sees loss and ruin.”

Ellie looked at me with wide skeptical eyes that danced with mirth, the smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she tried to keep a straight face. Luca slapped me on the back in humor, and said, “You’d best watch yourself, Nicolas.”

I chuckled, but my unsettled mind absorbed the woman’s prophesy.

She gathered the cards again and shuffled them. After Luca cut the deck into three piles, she laid them out as before. The first was the two of cups. “Your recent past shows harmony, man of Venice.” Luca nodded, apparently missing the fact the woman knew where he was from. I hadn’t missed it. There was nothing in his accent that hinted at a particular region of Italy. She set the next card beside the first. It was the eight of wands. “There is jealousy in your life now,” she told him.

He looked at me and then at Ellie. There was no jealousy between us. Proof again these mystic pastimes were nothing more than parlor games. The last card was the king of cups. She looked up into his face and for the first time I realized she had a glass eye that didn’t quite move with the other. The real eye looked him up and down, and the perusal made me very uncomfortable. I couldn’t say why that was, even if I’d been asked. She suddenly scooped up the cards and declared the reading completed.

Luca chuckled. “Madam, you’ve not read my last card.”

The baby fussed. The older woman turned to the younger and said something in a language I did not recognize but possessed rounded syllables found in the Latin languages. Romanian, perhaps. The young woman nodded and replied, then bared her breast to suckle her babe. She said, “The king of cups tells of a powerful man—”

The old woman voiced something that effectively stopped the younger mid-sentence.

How strange. We looked at one another. Ellie dug into her reticule and set a coin on the table. “I’d like my fortune read too, if you please.”

The old woman shook her head.

“Why not? I’ll pay.”

Chuckling, Luca set another coin on the cloth. Obviously deliberating, the old woman stared at the coins and pursed her lips. In the end, the prospect of more money won out. She shuffled the cards and set the deck on the table. Her one eye moved from person to person, at last settling on Ellie. She told her, “One card only, lady.”

Ellie turned over a single card and set it on the scarf. The lovers in reverse. The old woman said, “Separation,” and quickly scooped up the deck and scarf and snapped the folding table closed. The card reading was officially over.

“Wait, what does that mean?” Ellie asked obviously confused.

I hooked my arm in hers and said, “It means nothing my dear, it’s merely a game.”

The gypsy cackled. “A mistake many make.”

I tugged Ellie away. “Come love, let’s see about our dinner.”

***

During the French Revolution, art once commissioned and hoarded by the privileged became the property of the citizenry. The dining hall’s vaulted ceiling sported numerous panels undoubtedly taken from the aristocracy. There was no option for intimate dining, with the long tables set to accommodate more than one thousand guests. We found ourselves taking our meal beside a world of nations. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle raved over the Grand’s culinary excellence, and the hotel’s kitchen staff did not disappoint. Our meal was superb.

To my right sat a rather sallow character whose clothing held a faint note of opium smoke. I introduced myself and for the effort got the salt passed to me. Then I introduced myself and my wife to the English couple directly across the table, a veritable Jack Sprat and his wife. In the din, I couldn’t quite make out their names — Anders, Landers, or Flanders — but it didn’t matter. The less-than-friendly wife was too absorbed in finding fault with an exemplary meal. Four times did she call for our server to complain about how cold her soup was and how hot her salad was, as well as how fishy the fish tasted, and she asked him to inform the cook that the peas were still in their pods.

Ellie nudged my knee with hers. Mrs. Anders-Landers-Flanders’s complaints were laughable because we’d been served a cold soup of potato and leek, an intentionally hot salad of roasted pepper and ham, a pheasant course in cream that was by no means a fish course, and haricots verts which were obviously green beans and not unshelled peas. The poor sod of a husband never once raised an eye from his plate while the woman complained; rather, he ate with increased speed. I assume he hoped to cut and run to the men’s salon for cards and cigars. The thought was born out a moment later, when he declined the delicious raspberry and chocolate trifle, briefly kissed his wife’s cheek, and said, “I’ll be playing cards tonight my dear, don’t wait up for me.” In response the woman tasted the trifle and said, “My word, can I not find one decent morsel to eat in this city?”

***

I had just removed my tie when came a quiet knock at our door. A chasseur met me with a silver tray in hand, upon it a telegram. I tipped the man and closed the door behind him. Confused, I turned to my companions. “I can’t imagine what this is about.”

Luca and Ellie both drew close as I unfolded the paper. It was from Mrs. Fletcher. I read it aloud.

My Dear Boy, Come home. Thomas has been injured and is not expected to survive. Come home. We need you. MF

Ellie laid a hand on my arm. “I’ll pack straightaway.”

I could barely breathe. My dear Thom not expected to survive. Needing the anchor of her love, I pulled Ellie to me and hugged her fiercely. An instant later, Luca’s warm body enfolded me as well. Choking back my misery, I said to him, “I’m leaving now. Bring Ellie.”

Winding her arms around my waist, she protested, “No. Nicolas, my place is by your side.”

Luca said, “As is mine.”

I shook my head. “I’m needed there now.” Willing her to understand, I gathered her hands in mine. “I’ll not see you travel the channel at night. Wait until morning, the crossing is safer then.” I kissed her knuckles then turned to Luca. “I don’t know what I’ll find at home. I know you understand.” I knew he did because I read it in his eyes. Society had a dark underbelly where men of our ilk were concerned. Thom’s dire condition might very well have to do with his homosexuality.

He nodded and kissed my cheek softly. “I do. We’ll follow in the morning.”

So today is the last day for the Hot Summer Nights hop. I hope you've found some new favorite authors and some really good summer reads (and I hope a few are mine!)  Thank you for playing along with us.

I've shared excerpts, interviews, book trailers etc. Today I'm offering a peek inside my head. lol Really! I'm a linear writer, aka pantser. This means I write without a plan. It's not as uncommon as it sounds.
As an intuitive composer and stream of consciousness writer, I literally walk forward into the story and keep on walking until it tells me it’s done. Occasionally I'll fantasize about working from a plan. It would certainly allow me to write more stories because I'd know from the start where the story was going and how it would end. Unfortunately I know myself well enough to understand that's not how my creativity works. My stories cascade.
I'll give you an example using The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo. If you've followed that USA Today link below, then you know about the Wisconsin wolfman. When I heard about the wolfman, I'd also read about the Native American effigy mounds.

Shortly after that discovery, I had friends
over for dinner and told them about the story. In the course of conversation someone proposed a thought: What if the wolfman was a shaman in ceremonial attire? A light bulb lit over my head and my imagination cascaded. What if the shaman was ancient and he was watching over an important grave? What if this one man was the source of all the legends? What if he could shape-shift into the form of animals? What if he was in the form of a wolf and got hit by a car? Who drove the car? A veterinarian! And she's single!

And the story wrote itself. :)

I get a few good surprises not knowing what's around the bend. I say good from the view of a romance reader as well as author. I'm picky. If I can please me the romance reader, then so much the better!

My stories have moments where I've either tickled my brain because it's funny or charming or I'm struck by how profound the image is or surprised by the direction the story suddenly takes on its own. Writers know what I mean. It's that spot where you reread your paragraph and go, wow that's good, as if you hadn't actually written it! Every once in a while I'll write a scene like someone else is moving my hands over the keyboard. (The ancient Celts called that other-body sensation of possession being ridden). Writing certainly can be a form of possession at times.

Here are four moments that I've found charming, funny, surprising, and profound:

Charmed me

Made me laugh
The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo

Knowing he had to resume his wolf form at Livie’s home, he took a deep breath and shifted, but his inebriated mind was not concentrating and he ended up with a raven’s head atop his man’s body. He tried again. Forgetting that he still wore clothes, he found himself a small bird, pinned and struggling under the heavy garments that had fallen to the ground in a heap. He shifted into a feathered snake before taking the form of a mouse and working his way out of a sleeve.

The movement caught the attention of an owl on its nightly hunting foray. Just as it was about to swoop low on silent wings, intent on nabbing the large field mouse, a naked man with a mouse tail and whiskers appeared. The owl, clearly startled, flew off into the night. Laughing, Ash raised his arms and yelled after it, “This is not your night, my brotherrrr!”

Tail and whiskers absorbed into his changing form and once again bare skin grew feathers. He shifted into a raven — a six-foot-tall raven. Laughing at himself, he made his body small and flew fast to Livie’s home, albeit not in a straight line.

Surprised me
Dreamscape

Resisting the overpowering urge to touch her again, he closed his eyes instead and whispered, “Dream of me, sweetheart. Show me where to go.” And, just as he projected himself from room to room, the energy of his spirit plied her synapses…and to his complete and utter surprise, he fell into her dream.

Profound realization
Loving Leonardo

When in the presence of true beauty, my mind often imagines the person unclothed as the artists of the ages might have seen him. Sitting at my table was a statue carved in marble by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; an artist known for his remarkable ability to capture the essence of a narrative moment. And I found Luca Franco to be exactly that — a moment indelibly captured in time — a moment of meeting the mind could revisit in its entirety.

From every angle, he was beautifully made: black-haired, of medium build, and physically fit. He possessed a warm hue to his skin, his lineage no doubt stamped centuries past by the darker Moors or Turks. In startling contrast, and quite handsomely framed by black lashes, he had striking eyes the color one might see in a shadow falling across snow — not quite sky blue nor exactly steel gray, but a blending of the two in gradated rings.

I rose to shake his hand and felt the unmistakable current of compatibility. If this man weren’t forward in his mutual attraction, it was there nonetheless.

Today I'm offering a snippet from the second book in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo saga. Eli, as ancient shaman Eluwilussit is known today, discovers he has been given a gift. And it doesn't make him a shape-shifting Witchy Wolf like Ash. At first he isn't pleased...

Eluwilussit woke to find himself curled into a ball, his hands protectively covering his genitals. The fire was almost out. He had no idea how long he’d traveled. Peyote tended to steal time. Retracing his visions as best he could, he remembered that he’d beat the wall of the White World with his fists, remembered too that he’d slashed himself to get the attention of its inhabitants. Sitting up, he was met with a stench that indicated he’d fouled himself under Mescalito’s influence. He frowned. Adding another sliver of fat wood, he checked himself over in the light of the small blaze and found his skin smooth, clean and otherwise unmarred. Perhaps the stink was only a memory lingering in his mind like the rest. The Red World and its inhabitants were foul.

The spirits in the White World had seemed not to hear or see him, yet he couldn’t credit that. He could certainly hear and see them. The frown deepened as he remembered Bemidii kissing Nawkaw. The rest of it came out of the stinking haze. The forsaken ones had heard him screaming at the barrier and laughed at his frustration. Remembering now, a wave of nausea took him and he quickly turned his head to vomit but his heaving was dry. He’d survived the brutal gang rape in the spirit realm and it left a bad taste in his mouth in this realm. He craved an ice-cold Pepsi in the worst way. Mouth parched and filmy, he made an unsuccessful attempted to spit.

Another wave of nausea rolled over him and he curled on his side to let it pass. He wondered if submitting to those disgusting beings had indeed given him the means to shift his form into animals. If the trade were true, then it was worth the agony and debasement he experienced at their foul hands. With the skill and full knowledge of the Midewin shape-shifter, he would be a powerful Medicine Man. Sky Father would welcome him back. Aiyanna would be impressed by him, and they’d be together as they were meant to be. Even though he would have to live with his feet in two separate worlds, having her in one of them was worth anything.

Feeling stronger now, he tried to recall the legends of the shape-shifters. It was all he had to go on. He was never trained in this skill. Anger pricked him. Both Nawkaw and his pet could do this. Old Nawkaw must have told Ashkewheteasu how this was accomplished. Lifting his hand before his eyes, Eli stared at it and wished to turn it into a paw. He felt pressure in his bones and it quickly grew unbearable. He stopped wishing. Panting, he tried again. He watched as his fingers curled under as though his tendons were pulled by invisible strings. A cry tore from his throat and the hand changed before his eyes. When the pain in his bones subsided, he couldn’t believe what he saw. What animal had a paw such as this? Large and mottled with brown and gray fur, it appeared a cross between a deer’s hoof, a bear’s paw, and a man’s hand, with only two fingers and a thumb. Where his fingernails had been, long curved claws had taken their place.

Perhaps this gift was not an easy one to learn. He refocused his mind. The pain in his legs wrested another cry from him as bones altered and an animal’s shanks appeared. But this was not the wolf shape he envisioned! He tried again, returning to his own bare legs before assuming the same shape as before. What deceit is this? His rage increased with each attempt. And each was the same as the last. His arms and legs took the shape of some foul beast, with two toes ending in hooked claws. His fur was matted and sickly, his hide had weeping sores. He stood on his ugly legs, shook his hooked fists in the air and raged, “What have you made me? Sky Fatherrrrrrr!”

***
Dragging the deer carcass out to the road, Jimmy dropped his end of the rope when he heard a rumbling growl that seemed to come from under the ground. He turned to Scott. “What the fuck was that?”
Scott jerked to a halt. “Damn it Jimmy. Tell me when you’re gonna let go of the rope.” The doe was heavy, for all that she’d been field dressed.

“Shh! Listen.”

Scott shifted the rifle over his shoulder and listened. “I don’t hear anything.” The sun was just peeking over the horizon. He looked around. There was nothing out of the ordinary as far as he could see. “What did you hear?”

“I don’t know. It was like a man’s voice, but growling.”

“What?”

“I can’t describe it better than that.”

Scott pulled a half-full bottle of Jack from his pocket. Taking a swig, he handed it to his companion and chuckled. “Well it is close to Halloween. Maybe the bogeyman lives in these woods.”

Jimmy grabbed the bottle, took a swig, dumped the dregs out on the ground at his feet, then tossed it in a thicket.  “Way to go asshole. Leave me the dregs.”

Scott picked up his end of the rope again. “You’re just hearing things ‘cause you’re tired. We’ll get breakfast and coffee over at the HennyPenny.”

“Yeah. I could use some coffee. And a nap. I’m fuckin’ exhausted.”

“You’re fuckin’ hammered.”

“Hell if I am. You drank all the goddamn Jack and left me your backwash.”

Scott laughed. Walking on, they came upon flattened sheets of bark and a woven mat beside a hole in the ground. Scott said, “Hey look, a sinkhole! I’ve never seen one back here before.” Pulling his flashlight from his pocket, he trained it around the edges. This was old; it hadn’t just happened.

“Do you have to look now? I’m starving.”

“I just wanna see how far back it goes.” The cave below the sinkhole could be a few yards or hundreds of yards long. “Come on, let’s look.”

Jimmy sighed and set his gun against a tree. Scott did the same. A preliminary look into the hole showed hard packed ground about four feet below. Jumping in, they were pleased to discover they could stand easily after only a few stooped steps. The flashlight beam highlighted perfect stalactites coming down from the ceiling and stalagmites mounding up from the cave floor. They’d taken ages to form like that. “I don’t think anyone’s ever been in here before.”

Scott stumbled and shone the beam where he’d tripped. A gleaming skeleton stared up at them with sightless eye sockets. “Oh shit. Jimmy, look at this.”

“Damn. Is that like someone who died recently, like maybe murdered, or do you think an old skeleton? Look at its clothes. How old are the clothes?”

The flash light wasn’t strong enough to afford a better look. “I don’t know, I can’t tell. I’ll bring a bigger flashlight next time.”

Someone spoke from behind them, the deep voice sounding more like a snarl than a vocalization. “There won’t be a next time.”

Both whirled about. Scott’s flashlight beam came up from the floor. The creature’s feet had two sharp-clawed toes; the legs were barely fur-covered bone covered with open sores. Its torso was caved in, the emaciated cage of its ribs protruding under a taut membrane of flesh. The head defied description: not quite wolf, not quite deer, but a horrible combination of the two. A rack of small peeling antlers topped its head as if it were a stag, but the long sharp fangs displayed in its pulled-back lips suggested wolf. Ragged matted fur covered it from head to toe. It smelled foul, like roadkill in the heat of summer.
The hunters stood frozen to the spot, taking in the creature. Then Scott dropped the flashlight and ran to the sinkhole’s opening, followed by Jimmy. Clawing his way to the surface, Scott paused as he heard a thud. Jimmy must have stumbled over the skeleton. Within seconds Jimmy screamed, the terrified sound gurgled then went silent.
Scott’s hesitation now cost him, as suddenly he was pulled back into the hole. His screams scattered a riot of roosting crows from the trees.

***
Breathing hard, Eluwilussit stood over the bodies of the hunters. His new claws had ripped open their throats and sliced into their bellies. Warm blood trickled down his face. He ran his tongue across his lips, licking away blood. He was instantly seized with a great hunger. He licked again. Then he licked his paws. He eyed the bodies lying there, their sweet blood pooling. They were nothing but meat after all. Kneeling at the larger of the two, he hooked his claws into the belly gash and pulled the body open. The heat issuing from the opened gut steamed in the beam of the fallen flashlight. Ripping the warm liver free first, Eli ate his fill of Scott’s delicious internal organs and then feasted on the other man.

This wasn’t the gift he’d wanted or desired, but he felt powerful. He doubted he’d be able to use it to return to the Sky Father’s camp. He thought a moment, then the lips of his muzzle pulled back in a hideous grin. The bird stone would fly him there, and he knew exactly where it was.

Today I'm offering a snippet from a recent character interview with Luca Franco, one of my leading men from Loving Leonardo and Loving Leonardo - The Quest. Luca is very real in my mind and I'll tell you why...

So after my encounter with Nicolas where I sat him down and asked him questions, I wondered what Luca might say. I no sooner had the thought when he appeared at the table. Luca Franco was exactly how Nicolas described him. Of course he would be. I’d seen him myself roughly forty years ago. I never knew his name, but he was much older than I and worked in my neighborhood deli. I grew up in a blended Greek and Italian neighborhood in Chicago. Like a duckling, I do believe I imprinted on dark and handsome Mediterranean men. When I wrote Luca, I saw him in my mind's eye because he was real. I recall he had very little English, but OMG was he beautiful with those snow-shadow eyes against his warm-hued skin. I think cold cuts sales tripled with him there. Luca is my imagination’s homage to that gorgeous foreign man. When my voice finally returned, I had a conversation with him.

Luca: Rose! Buona sera!

Rose: Good afternoon Luca, I’m glad you could join me. The story is told through Nicolas’ eyes, but I was wondering if you’d like to share your own perspectives.

Luca: I am happy to oblige, my dear.

Rose: Well, to start why not introduce yourself. I’m sure people will be interested in the inner workings of Luca Franco.

He chuckled.

Luca: I can’t imagine that to be the case. I’m a simple fellow. But as I owe you much Rose, I’ll follow your lead. Where shall we begin?

Rose: Like Nicolas, you too work at the Ashmolean Museum. What work do you do specifically?

Luca: I travel the world searching for precious items from antiquity and bring them back to the museum to be studied, catalogued, and kept safe from the further ravages of time.

Rose: And this interest in Leonardo da Vinci you share with Nicolas and Ellie…I know Ellie is drawn to the philosophy of the man many consider to be the personification of the Renaissance, and Nicolas is fascinated by the mind behind man’s unique artworks...

Luca: Yes. They bring perspectives into our conversations that are as intriguing as the artist himself.

Rose: And what do you bring?

Luca: I’ve studied da Vinci’s world and his place in history to feed my own curiosity. The man was beyond brilliant. He possessed a ricchezza d'ingegno, a talento. A persona di genio.

Rose: I’m sorry. I only speak a little Italian.

Luca: Forgive me. I said Leonardo possessed a richness of intellect, a talent. He was undoubtedly a person of genius

Rose: I find him all of those things as well.

Those snow-shadow blue eyes sparkled. Good lord he was as handsome as I remembered.

Luca: But of course you would. You're the author here.

Rose: So…tell me about this unusual relationship you have with Nicolas and Ellie.

Luca: Never have I felt such loving acceptance. We’ve bonded through our common interests, beliefs, and temperaments. I love them with every fiber of my being. I’d die to keep them safe.

Rose: Yes, there are terrible dangers ahead. And do you see this…this, loving ménage lasting? Nicolas has family obligations to his title and estate...

Luca: Oddly enough, I do. The important thing is love, Rose. With love, anything is possible... no matter the opinions of the world. This is true even in your time, mio caro.

What more could I say. He mirrored my sentiments exactly. Of course he would.  :)
