Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday (HIS)(RO)(LGBT)

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8-10 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished. Today it's a bit from the steamy side of my imagination-- Loving Leonardo -- (Book 1 in my award-winning, Victorian polyamorous romance-- the ongoing Loving Leonardo series.)

First my 8, then details after~
There was self-critical humor in her voice when she said, “Sir
Nicolas, I’m afraid you’ll think me quite silly, but what has mathematics to do with it?”
Brooks chuckled, and taking a drink, dipped his mustache in his water glass. He came up for air looking very much like the Emperor Tamarin Monkey I’d once seen in the London Zoo.
I set down my fork and knife and helped myself to the heel of dry bread to calm my stomach, then explained, “Were a trained eye to look upon da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man with his arms and legs spread wide in the illusion of movement, it would see an image based on the much older writings of the Roman architect Vitruvius. Many of the sacred geometry principles of the human body as well as ancient architecture have been compiled into art by Leonardo da Vinci. His perspectives are considered perfect and balanced.”
Mrs. Ormont, either lost or disinterested, said, “Oh.”
That was the way of it for most of my academic career. A certain curiosity went part and parcel with being an art historian, and not everyone shared it. Luca Franco however, had found one of his own.

Behind the scenes for the snippet above:After imbibing a little too much the night before, Nicolas reluctantly takes dinner among the passengers on the ocean liner bound for Venice and finds Mr. Brookes' enjoyment of his meal a little too much as well. Somewhat the distraction from the greasy sight, the conversation goes to Leonardo da Vinci and the mathematics behind the artist's perfection. The conversation bores Mrs. Ormont, but the historian Luca Franco is certainly engaged.

Weekend Writing Warriors

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors mini hop! Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished.

Today I'm offering another small sampling from Loving Leonardo - The Quest ~ part 2 in the award-winning Loving Leonardo series.
This ongoing Victorian tale is a sexy, polyamorous romp with a touch of reader-interactive art history.

First my 8 lines then the rest after~

While the play was entertaining and the theme interesting enough, with its occult undertones, the ending had left a bad taste in my mouth. After finding their treasure, Axël the hero and his heroine Sara fall in love, and then decide their dream is far too magnificent to be fulfilled in the

unimaginative reality of their lives. With no dream to live for, they killed themselves as the sun rose and the curtain fell.
Apparently unfazed, my companions discussed the story at length as we walked back to the hotel. I couldn’t help but draw a parallel to our lives, although I was certain the dark thoughts were mine alone. It didn’t help that we passed a mortician’s window with the latest embalming on display as a macabre advertisement to the skill to be had there. Beside the door, a glass frame was filled with memento mori photographs. In general I found the practice of posing the dead in life-like attitudes a disturbing one-- especially the staring facsimile eyes painted upon closed lids.

What just happened~
In Paris following clues in Leonardo da Vinci's book, my trio takes in the Parisian sights. At this time, Nicolas has been plagued by unsettling dreams he attributes to the terrible events at Conte Bruno's villa in Venice. Nicolas has a niggling fear the dreamlike happiness he has with Ellie and Luca will be taken away.

Paranormal Love Wednesdays Blog Hop! A bit about a wolf-shifter

It's hump day and that means it's time for the Paranormal Love Wednesdays Blog Hop!
I love writing paranormal love stories, or better put, I love crafting a story around ghosts, shape-shifters, witches, etc
and making it sound believable. This week I'm sharing a bit from a story inspired by actual news events -- The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the stage~

Determining she could get the healing wolf-cross dog to eat if she tended him at home, Dr. Olivia Rosalini does just that. She has no idea this dog is an ancient Native American shaman bent on suicide.

My snippet~

Inside the house, Ash took a deep breath, his keen sense of smell in this form touching upon every detail of the space. This was her place. He struggled for the name he’d heard the man of the People use when addressing her. Livie. This was Livie’s home. He’d never been inside one of their structures before, though he’d often take the shape of a chipmunk or crow and draw near enough to listen to them.
They’d changed much in the centuries they’d been here, these strange people. He watched them clear the land and build their villages, watched those villages change and the people with them. Their machines changed too, as did their animals. From beasts to pull their carts, to the machines that took their place, the white men seemed to always hurry. Hurry and destroy.
He’d watched them closely in the last fifty years, partly because there were so many now that lived a short distance from his cave, and partly because they’d changed as a people, and he didn’t understand why. They no longer seemed to care about anything around them. They’d sit outside their homes and cook their food without wood while their impolite children shrieked and splashed in what they referred to as a pool. They talked about things that seemed trivial to him but extremely important to them. On one level, he found them fascinating as he learned their language. His belly suddenly clenched as images of his wife’s defiled grave flashed before his eyes. On another level, he found them greedy beyond measure. Livie was not that way, nor was the small woman Jenni. They were extremely caring, even in the way they addressed one another.

~*~

Out of habit and loneliness, Olivia picked up the TV remote and turned on the television for background noise. She stood a moment surfing through the channels. The news was too much to handle sometimes and reality TV too mean-spirited to enjoy. Settling upon a channel that played benign black-and-white TV series, she turned to her four-legged guest. “Go on. Go see what that nose can sniff out while I figure out what to feed you.”

Discover the truth behind the fiction
http://thewitchywolfandthewendigo.blogspot.com/

The True Beginning

Ten years ago, a reporter for a small-town newspaper heard word of strange dawn and dusk sightings of a wolf-like creature roaming the Wisconsin countryside. Her investigation revealed the local police officials had initially taken these calls lightly, but this had changed when calls began coming from upstanding citizens.

Authorities had determined what these eyewitnesses had actually seen was a lone wolf broken off from a pack running in the wilds of northern Wisconsin. Young male wolves seeking to start a new pack are known to strike off on their own. Leaving the vast stretches of wooded landscape, they might travel one hundred miles in a day. It seemed likely. However, the witnesses were adamant that what they’d seen had been no ordinary wolf. This wolf walked like a man.

Intrigued, the reporter collected the stories. To her surprise, other witnesses came forward telling of sightings that they’d never reported. In fact, some eyewitness accounts had occurred more than seventy years prior, the details only whispered to relatives who were sworn to secrecy lest friends and neighbors think heavy drinking was involved. These stories she also collected, for she knew hushed secrecy was not a direction fame-seekers usually take.

More curious now, the reporter deepened her investigation and uncovered another bizarre detail: the sightings were mentioned in ancient oral traditions of the Native Americans in the region. In those tales, dog men or witchy wolves looked after burial mounds in much the same way jackal-headed Anubis guarded the tombs of ancient Egypt. And even more bizarre, early French explorers knew of them too. They called these wolf-men the loup-garou.

@MySexySaturday #MySexySaturday #MSSAuthors

It's My Sexy Saturday! Participating authors post 7 paragraphs, 7 sentences, or 7 words. This time it's 7 paragraphs from Enchanted Skye ~A tale about an American on the run named Jenna who unwittingly unleashes an ancient charm and traps a Selkie unawares.

Setting the Stage:

Exhausted from her trans-Atlantic flight and half-frozen from
her unfortunate car trouble, Jenna thaws out in a hot bath at MacCodrum's Inn. Bea the owner was explaining something just as the phone rang. Jenna's so drained she didn't quite catch it all...something about the ancient doors have a way of sticking. Jenna soon discovers that's exactly the case and realizes she doesn't have a towel or a robe. In this scene, she decides to make a dash for her room. The owner did say there were no other guests...

My Seven~

Jenna opened the door a crack and listened to the soft rumble of male voices coming from downstairs. Then hearing a woman laugh, determined that was Bea. Bea said she was the only guest tonight. Maybe the storm had driven people inside to wait it out. Opening the door further, Jenna peered down the hall. Fairly confident she was alone upstairs, and shielded by a ridiculously small towel, she decided to make a run for it. Now or never. Trying to remember which of the seven rooms was hers, she crept down the hall. Suddenly Bea’s voice echoed in the stairway. “Knock it off ye great fishy beasties, yer getting’ me wet!”
The laughing male voices grew louder. They were coming up the stairs! Jenna clearly heard a man on the stairs say, “I’ll be right down. I’m going to get out of these wet clothes.” Another man replied, “I’m right behind you.”
Jenna gasped. Oh no! Ducking into the nearest room, she quickly closed the door behind her and pressed her ear to the wood and listened.

~*~

Startled, Alex spun around. A woman had just barged into his room and slammed the door closed as if she’d been chased inside. That was something all unto itself, but she also held a small towel to the front of her body, leaving the back exquisitely bare. He suddenly felt odd, the same odd feeling he’d felt at the lighthouse earlier that day.
Dawning realization took him. This beauty was Angus MacLeod’s niece from America. His heart started to race. Availing himself of his fortunate vantage point, he looked her over. Her skin was the warm color of honey, her dark hair sparkled with water droplets now, but he knew it would be a rich chestnut brown when dry. Her lovely caramel-colored eyes, he knew, possessed gold-flecked irises and long lashes. Earlier that morning, the smallest details had been burned into his brain. He now added shapely legs, a perfect bottom, and a compelling pair of dimples at her lower back.
    She slowly opened the door.
“You might wait a bit. They’re sure t’ be walking back downstairs in a moment.”

Enchanted Skye

Enchanted Skye

Excerpt~
Late afternoon sunbeams shone through the crevice and partially lit the ground as Alex dashed through the passage. From the outside, the hidden entrance to the sea lay mostly submerged between three jutting crags. Waves buffeted these with intermittent cascades of seawater. In the light of day, this sunlit water bathed the cave in an eerie blue-green glow.
Waterskin tucked tight under his arm, Alex stripped from his clothes as best he could on the run. He entered the rocky cavern naked and breathless. Flinging the smooth skin over his shoulders, he hunkered down. The transformation was instantaneous. Dynamically streamlined flippers appeared where arms and legs had been a moment before. He flexed his muscles and arched his back, then turned his head from side to side to fit more comfortably within his second skin. At water’s edge now, he took a deep breath and plunged. Emerging on the other side of the sea cave, he broke through the water’s surface and went to the rocks where a half dozen seals lay sleeping in the sun. From this vantage, he saw Jenna’s little red car in the distance.
Hey, yer blocking my sun. Surprised, Alex turned to find his elder brother sunning on the rocks just below.
With no voice by human standards, the brothers spoke telepathically. Alex asked, So why are ye here Lachlan?
     I felt like a swim.
Alex eyed him skeptically. Is that so? A swim ye say? I don’t know if ye’ve noticed yet brother, but you’re dry.
Lachlan laughed, the harsh sound not unlike that of a loud barking dog with a smoker’s cough. He was there for one reason, to be sure Jenna was still friendly toward their brother, for as Bea said, a loving relationship could start on friendly terms. The alternative was too painful to consider. A terrible strain existed between Alex and Jenna just days ago, and though they’d had a slight improvement since the evening of music at the Spùinneadair-mara, they weren’t taking any chances. He said, Well maybe I wanted to see where my little brother was headed like a bat out of hell. Following Alex’s gaze, he caught sight of Jenna’s car in the distance. Ah, now I see.
Climbing onto higher rocks for a better view, Alex watched Jenna’s car make the bend where she’d nearly fallen to her death. The road was safer coming than going. He poked his snout in her direction. It’s crazy because we’ve only just met. But Lachlan, I think I’m in love with that woman.
I can tell ye are, Alex. We all can.
Alex barked a chuckle. That obvious is it?
As plain as the whiskers on yer snout. But ye must move slow, Alex. Only a special woman would care to return the love of a sea creature, aye? What do ye think she’d say to see you in your waterskin? Ye can’t go and scare the poor lass by being impetuous. Ye got t’ give her time to know ye. Once she does, it won’t matter. Tell me ye understand what it is I’m saying, brother.
That was the most Lachlan could say. If Alex and Jenna never discovered their love for one another, Alex would die. If Alex knew it was the charm that instigated his feelings, he would doubt them. In his doubt, he’d to shy away from the love promised. He’d end his life to escape the longing.
In that moment, Lachlan wished his father were home. His father knew personally the charm that snared Alex, for it was his mother’s tears that stole the elder man’s heart. In these many months since they’d scattered her ashes on the waves, his father’s broken heart sought to ease its grief in the forgetful sea. Their parents knew deep abiding love for all their lifetime spent together. Lachlan wanted a love like that for himself and he’d yet to find it. It was their example that kept him single all these years.
Alex told him, I do understand, Lachlan. The last thing I want to do is scare her. I can’t express what her shunning felt like. He explained a little of what occurred before the scotch arrived.
Lachlan barked a laugh. Whatever were ye thinking, ogling her like that?
Damned if I know, I lost my head. She’s beautiful, aye?
Pleasant enough. He looked at Alex skeptically. Seems like a small reason to spit fire though.
Alex shuffled uncomfortably and looked away.
Reading there was more here than his brother wanted to discuss, Lachlan said, Well, she seemed better about being locked in with ye at tea, no?
Aye, a bit. We’d just started to talk when ye came back with the car. She was fixed to leave.  Alex looked toward the lighthouse again.
Lachlan considered him. From what he knew of the charm, Alex’s preoccupation with Jenna was expected. I dinna think Uncle Angus would mind if ye stopped by to visit.
Alex gave him a whiskery smile.
Butting Alex into the water, Lacklan barked, What are ye bothering me for when all I want to do is sun myself? Get a move on before she gets there!
***
Minutes later, his clothing gathered and put back on, and his seal skin tucked safely away, Alex walked the brisk quarter mile to from the MacNeal property to the lighthouse, and knocked on the door.

The following scene picks up after Jenna and Alex share dinner with Uncle Angus

Jenna headed down to the small tidal pool, and Alex followed. Facing the rocks where the seals lay like speckled blobs in the sunset, she said, “This was where I scattered my grandmother’s ashes. My uncle said he played here with his sister when they were children.”
“It’s a fine place. Mary Margaret would have liked that.”
     “You knew my grandmother?”
Alex shook his head. “Indirectly. Angus was best of friends with my grandfather. I was raised on tales of their childhood.”
“So that’s why you all call him ‘uncle.’ I thought it was just a term of respect.”
       “It’s both. He’s a lovable auld fellow.”
       She smiled. “Yes he is.”
The largest seal slid from the rocks and swam toward them. Jenna pointed at him. “Are they usually so, so…friendly?”
“They are, and they’re overly curious too.” Alex watched his brother slowly making his way toward them. He asked silently, What are ye still doing here, Lachlan?
Goin’ for that swim. The seal barked, his nostrils opening and closing, making his whiskers swing to and fro.
Jenna jumped and grabbed onto Alex’s arm before releasing it just as quickly. She took several steps backward. “Are they dangerous?”
Alex narrowed his eyes at the creature who now floated on his back, scratching his belly with his flipper. “They keep to themselves and are harmless if you leave them be.”
Surprised by his lecturing tone, Jenna quickly assured him, “Believe me, I wouldn’t dream of bothering them.” The seal did a barrel roll on top of the water then blew bubbles. It made Jenna laugh. “They certainly are funny animals. My grandmother and I used to love watching them at the zoo.”
Alex chuckled. “Aye, nature’s clowns.” To Lachlan he said, What d’ ye think about living in the zoo, brother? I might be able t’ arrange that for ye.
      The seal blew raspberries.
Alex turned to Jenna. “So if I asked ye to give me a ride back to the house instead of making me walk, would ye say yes? Even though it’s obvious ye despise me for dousing you in ale and for other things?”
Jeanna laughed nervously. “I don’t despise you. I’ll drive you on one condition.”
      “What condition?”
“You drive,” Jenna said, and tossed her keys. “When I saw, in the light of day, where I’d buried that car—”
Catching the keys cleanly, Alex laughed. “Ye get used the roads after a while.”
