Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday, I'm participating in the Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished. This time I'm offering another bit from my newest ~ Enchanted Skye.

Setting the scene:Jenna has had a terrible day. She fled a crazy ex in the states and left her name behind so he couldn't find her. Shortly after arriving on the Isle of Skye, she scattered her grandmother's ashes. Now in a freezing spring rain, she gets her rental car stuck on a dangerous coastal road. What else can go wrong? Plenty.

My Six:

Putting the Mini in gear, she attempted to get back on the road but found herself stuck. No problem. She’d learned to drive in Chicago where winters were heavy with lake-effect snow. That in itself was its own form of driver’s education. After several unsuccessful attempts, in forward and reverse, she faced the fact the tiny car wasn’t budging an inch. She was stuck.
Seeing no recourse, she turned off the ignition, put her hazard lights on, and waited. There hadn’t been a single vehicle on the coast road earlier, and she doubted anyone would be driving now. She peered through the sleeting rain then turning the key in the ignition to briefly light the dashboard, she eyed the clock. After fifteen minutes, she let out a defeated sigh, weighed her options, and made a decision. It took some fancy maneuvering over the tiny car’s seat but she managed to stuff her purse into the suitcase before she headed out into the cold driving rain.

While lake-effect weather in Chicago was often severe, the sea magnified any early spring storm in Skye threefold. Jenna hurried along. It’s only a quarter mile. Back home, her house was two blocks from school and she’d hoofed it to her first period class in a downpour more than once. It’s only a quarter mile. Several minutes into her trek, she fully regretted her decision to leave the car. She wasn’t dressed for this icy driving rain. By the time she got to the inn’s door, her teeth were chattering and her hands were numb from the cold.

A young woman answered the bell.

“Oh my lord. Come in, come in,” Beatrix said. She took the sodden suitcase from the woman’s ice cold grip. “You’re not Jenna MacLeod, surely?”

“I — I am. M-my car g-got stuck.” She pointed over her shoulder.

“Oh dear, you poor thing. You look near frozen. I’ll set you up to thaw in a hot bath straightaway.”

Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday, I'm participating in the Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished. This time I'm offering another bit from my newest ~ Enchanted Skye.

Setting the scene: In a comedy of errors, Jenna managed to get herself locked in Alex's room. His sister Bea sends up dinner through the window and along with it a bottle of fine scotch. Jenna is furious and slams a glass full. Alex senses she's lashing out at him from stress. Neither know her earlier tears have unleashed an ancient charm upon him. The following is a turning point on the whole unpleasant day.

My Six:

The genuine laugh transformed her and his heart flipped over in his chest from seeing it. Lovely even in her pique, the smiling Jenna was radiant. Alex was completely smitten. For the past hour and a half, all words sent in his direction, sparse as they were, had been angry ones, but her small bit of laughter gave Alex hope that this was at heart a good-natured woman rather than a scold. The more he thought, he had to concede it was his slow perusal of her naked curves that set her off like an irate fishwife. Of course she’d be taken aback, as any woman might.

He hid his frown, chalking up his lapse in manners to having been at sea too long this time. He did believe, however, that foolish as that had been, her scorn didn’t fit the crime. A thought hit him then as if she’d voiced herself. She missed her grandmother. All of this anger was her grief speaking. She’d lashed out at him for more than his thoughtless behavior. She’d lashed out at him because he was there. Sensing she needed to talk, he asked, “Your accent sounds American, is this so?”

Obviously more than a little tipsy, Jenna looked around the room to find a place to sit. Seeing only the bed, she slid to the floor. “Yes. I’m from Chicago.”

He took a seat on the floor across from her with his back to the bedpost. “Ah, I see. So are you here on vacation then?”

Drawing her knees to her chin, she hugged her legs and shook her head. “No, not a vacation.”

Alex forgot how to breathe and his erection was returning in full. Obviously under the influence of abundant scotch, she’d forgotten she wasn’t wearing panties. His next words came out thicker than usual, “Ye look troubled, Jenna. Ye can talk about it if ye like…”

 Here's the story

"Romance fans will find this a creatively different and most enjoyable read.  I highly recommend it."

Sneak Peek Sunday!

It's Sunday, I'm participating in the Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished. This time I'm offering a bit from my newest ~ Enchanted Skye.

Setting the scene: In a comedy of errors, Jenna managed to get herself locked in Alex's room. She's furious, and he's fallen under an ancient charm.

My Six:
He shook his head. “I’m afraid we’re stuck for the time being. Let me see what—”

She cut in, “Like hell we are!” Marching to the door, she shoved him aside and pounded on the wood. “Bea! Help! Somebody! Bea!”

A surprised male voice came from the other side. “How can I help ye?”

Jenna called through the door, “Please get the owner. Please go and get Beatrix MacCodrum. I’m stuck in here!” There were two men in the hall now and both were laughing. “This isn’t funny! Please bring the owner, bring Bea!” The laughter deepened and was followed by indistinct conversation. “Oh!” Jenna whirled to the smiling man behind her in fury. “They’re laughing! The rude…they’re no doubt friends of yours.”

He raised a brow at her. “Love, it was you who came into my room and helped yourself to my shirt. And it was you who broke my door, and you who are currently giving me hell for your mistake. Perhaps you’re confused about what constitutes ill manners.”

When her lips pressed together in an angry line and she turned back to the door to pound again, Alex stared dumbly, not sure what to do. That odd feeling had intensified now that he’d actually touched her. For all her spit and fire, Jenna MacLeod was certainly a lovely creature. In fact, spit and fire added to her beauty. She’d have been even more furious had she realized the flannel shirt didn’t cover her cute bum.

Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway Hop!

Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway HopI've had major issues with blogger the past few days. If you're here for the paranormal blog hop. I had to cancel my participation because I couldn't access the blogger dashboard in time. If you're here for this hop, notice I've moved it here from my other blog. I had an old Grouch Day post up! I apologize for any confusion. So...without further ado...

Welcome to the Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway Hop! Find the other participants by clicking on the picture.
◄◄◄◄◄

There are 127 authors participating so you have 126 chances to win something! I'm offering reader's choice of shape-shifters ~ The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 in the saga) or a copy of my newest Enchanted Skye. I'll introduce both.
~Be sure to leave a comment with your email to win~

It's said that most legends are rooted in truth. One such legend was the spark behind The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo.

Several years ago while enjoying a much-touted artist's tour not far from our home, my husband and I stumbled upon an author selling her book at an artist's studio. I talked to her a while and ended up buying a copy. It wasn't the sort I'd normally read, not with its campy cover and B-movie topic of the Wisconsin wolfman, but I thought it would be fun to read passages to my husband while he drove us from studio to studio.

Apparently eyewitnesses had recently claimed to have seen a wolf walking like a man. The locations mentioned were minutes from our home, and according to this book, many of these sightings were from reputable witnesses. Beyond that modern urban legend, sightings of this creature had taken place for decades and well into the past. We learned the author was actually a newspaper reporter who covered the story. One eyewitness account in particular captured my fancy...

More than 70 years ago, a night watchman at a local convent saw something that chilled him to his marrow: a wolfman kneeling atop an ancient Native American burial mound. That correlation caught my attention. Wisconsin was once filled with burial and effigy mounds. Returning home unscathed, the night watchman told his family about his frightening experience, but swore them to secrecy for fear he'd get fired if people thought he'd been drinking on the job. Fast-forward to the late 1980s when his son read about the modern encounters in the newspaper and contacted the reporter. He passed on his father's experience and included a sketch of what his father had seen.

My imagination was on fire! Native legends in the Great Lakes Region mention magical wolf or dog guardians who watch over the burials of warriors. I learned the early French explorers in the area mentioned the Loup Garou (wolf man) in their journals. Interesting that legends of grave guardians around the world often take the form of wolves or dogs. The ancient Egyptians had jackal-headed Anubis (Lord of the Dead) and in modern times we have Greyfriars Bobby.

So I now had a story simmering in my imagination. I needed more information! My husband and I took the Great Mound Tour across Wisconsin to Effigy Mounds National Monument park in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. We drove from site to site and I saw these effigies and burials for myself, or what was left of them. Imagine my surprise when I discovered there are 3,000-year-old effigy mounds in the form of standing men with pointy upright ears like a wolf.

As a writer with a healthy imagination, there was nothing to do but write a story around these details. Written in two parts, my tale concerns Ashkewheteasu ~ an immortal Native American shaman of the Middle Woodland period of the Great Lakes Mound Builders (Hopewell culture). Awash with grief at the death of his wife, he makes a plea to the Great Mystery to be allowed to watch over her burial mound for all time. And for that, he's given the solitary life of a shape-shifting guardian.

I found this fun clip on youtube.
This reporter's book lit the fire for mine.

And here's my version of this curious urban legend:

My next shape-shifter is about a family of Selkie living on Scotland's Isle of Skye. This too is rooted in factual information.

National Grouch Day!

I'm sitting at my laptop first thing in the morning, fresh cup of coffee in hand. I'm participating in various things around the web today, including the International Blog Action Day on my main blog. I'm pretty good with time management when it comes to juggling the blogs. I created all the posts last night so posting this morning went quickly. I checked my email after, as I do each morning. I use yahoo mail. I could crab about that fact but I won't because something caught my eye on the front page of yahoo.According to Sesame Street Magazine, October 15 is National Grouch Day, "a day to celebrate (or uncelebrate) Grouches and their way of life."
I had no idea.

Creative people often draw their inspiration from life. Oscar the Grouch, that green Muppet who lives in a trash can on Sesame Street, had to come from somewhere. I found myself interested in what that spark was. Looking further into the holiday turned up some interesting trivia...

In the behind the scenes book Sesame Street Unpaved, it turns out Oscar the Grouch was inspired by an employee of a tavern in Manhattan called Oscar's Salt of the Sea. There, Jim Henson was waited on by a man who was so over-the-top grouchy that rather than be annoyed at his behavior,  Jim and his companions grew amused by it. So amused in fact, that going to Oscar's Tavern became their regular lunchtime entertainment. Before long, Oscar the Grouch came into being. And Jim Henson sketched him out on the tavern's paper placemats.

Caroll Spinney, the voice and human machine inside the Oscar Muppet says that he based Oscar's voice on  a Bronx taxi driver who drove him to work one day. The driver snapped gruffly, "Where to, Mac?"

How can anyone be grouchy knowing all this?  :)

I'm participating in the International Blog Action Day today and the topic is human rights. Come add your thoughts to this important discussion.
