Paranormal Love Wednesdays Blog Hop! A bit about a wolf-shifter

It's hump day and that means it's time for the Paranormal Love Wednesdays Blog Hop!
I love writing paranormal love stories, or better put, I love crafting a story around ghosts, shape-shifters, witches, etc
and making it sound believable. This week I'm sharing a bit from a story inspired by actual news events -- The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the stage~

Determining she could get the healing wolf-cross dog to eat if she tended him at home, Dr. Olivia Rosalini does just that. She has no idea this dog is an ancient Native American shaman bent on suicide.

My snippet~

Inside the house, Ash took a deep breath, his keen sense of smell in this form touching upon every detail of the space. This was her place. He struggled for the name he’d heard the man of the People use when addressing her. Livie. This was Livie’s home. He’d never been inside one of their structures before, though he’d often take the shape of a chipmunk or crow and draw near enough to listen to them.
They’d changed much in the centuries they’d been here, these strange people. He watched them clear the land and build their villages, watched those villages change and the people with them. Their machines changed too, as did their animals. From beasts to pull their carts, to the machines that took their place, the white men seemed to always hurry. Hurry and destroy.
He’d watched them closely in the last fifty years, partly because there were so many now that lived a short distance from his cave, and partly because they’d changed as a people, and he didn’t understand why. They no longer seemed to care about anything around them. They’d sit outside their homes and cook their food without wood while their impolite children shrieked and splashed in what they referred to as a pool. They talked about things that seemed trivial to him but extremely important to them. On one level, he found them fascinating as he learned their language. His belly suddenly clenched as images of his wife’s defiled grave flashed before his eyes. On another level, he found them greedy beyond measure. Livie was not that way, nor was the small woman Jenni. They were extremely caring, even in the way they addressed one another.

Out of habit and loneliness, Olivia picked up the TV remote and turned on the television for background noise. She stood a moment surfing through the channels. The news was too much to handle sometimes and reality TV too mean-spirited to enjoy. Settling upon a channel that played benign black-and-white TV series, she turned to her four-legged guest. “Go on. Go see what that nose can sniff out while I figure out what to feed you.”

The True Beginning

Ten years ago, a reporter for a small-town newspaper heard word of strange dawn and dusk sightings of a wolf-like creature roaming the Wisconsin countryside. Her investigation revealed the local police officials had initially taken these calls lightly, but this had changed when calls began coming from upstanding citizens.

Authorities had determined what these eyewitnesses had actually seen was a lone wolf broken off from a pack running in the wilds of northern Wisconsin. Young male wolves seeking to start a new pack are known to strike off on their own. Leaving the vast stretches of wooded landscape, they might travel one hundred miles in a day. It seemed likely. However, the witnesses were adamant that what they’d seen had been no ordinary wolf. This wolf walked like a man.

Intrigued, the reporter collected the stories. To her surprise, other witnesses came forward telling of sightings that they’d never reported. In fact, some eyewitness accounts had occurred more than seventy years prior, the details only whispered to relatives who were sworn to secrecy lest friends and neighbors think heavy drinking was involved. These stories she also collected, for she knew hushed secrecy was not a direction fame-seekers usually take.

More curious now, the reporter deepened her investigation and uncovered another bizarre detail: the sightings were mentioned in ancient oral traditions of the Native Americans in the region. In those tales, dog men or witchy wolves looked after burial mounds in much the same way jackal-headed Anubis guarded the tombs of ancient Egypt. And even more bizarre, early French explorers knew of them too. They called these wolf-men the loup-garou.

Sneak Peek Sunday!

It's Sunday and time for the  Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished.  I'm offering a bit from my legend-inspired romance ~ The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo
(book 1 Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the scene:
Believing his refusal to eat has to do with the clinic, Livie takes the recuperating dog home to see if a familiar environment would help. She has no idea this dog has never been in a house before. She also has no idea her patient isn't a dog. Here, Ash sees the inside of the white man's home for the first time. The TV is a surprise.

My Six:
Olivia was surprised when the wolf-cross pulled the leash out of her hand. More so when he picked it up and carried in his mouth as he haltingly paced up the walkway to her house. She’d seen excited dogs hold their leashes before but she got the strangest impression this dog just didn’t want to be led. She opened the door as he waited.
“After you. Let’s find some dinner, I’ll bet you’re hungry.”

Out of habit and loneliness, she picked up the TV remote and turned on the television for background noise.

Inside the house, Ash took a deep breath, his keen sense of smell in this form touching upon every detail of the place. This was her place. He struggled for the name he’d heard the man of the People use when addressing her. Livie. This was Livie’s home. Livie was not that way, nor was the small woman Jenni. They were extremely caring, even in the way they addressed one another.

Ash hadn’t notice she’d left the room. He stared at the noisy box in disbelief. People — many people — were inside the small box talking. Odder still, he heard the laughter of others and looked around, expecting to see them. He narrowed his eyes at the box. What is this thing? Suddenly, the people were colorful and louder. Too loud for his sensitive wolf ears. He took several steps back, watching as a boy dripped food on his chest. Then a woman, his mother presumably, took his clothing, and poured thick blue liquid on it. A moment later, the clothes were new.

Just as suddenly, a young woman held one of those voice boxes to her ear. It was nearly identical to the voice box Livie talked into earlier. Phone, she called it. Again the scene changed. Women wearing grass skirts danced to loud fast music and an enormous canoe moved swiftly over white-capped water. Ash looked down, expecting the floor to be wet, but it wasn’t. A man’s voice said, “Hawaii Five O, tonight at eight.”

Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday, I'm participating in the Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished.
This time I'm offering another bit from
The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book1 in the saga) ~ A story about an ancient shaman in a modern world, inspired by history and a very creepy urban legend. Follow the links below to a free chapter sampling and the local legend that just begged me to write it.

Setting the stage: Finding his wife's burial mound desecrated, Ash is consumed by guilt.

My Six:
There was no sense to this. What kind of people disturb the dead? Couldn’t they see this was sacred ground, a resting place? Composing himself, he wiped the tears from his eyes before reverently setting the small bone back in the opened mound.

Twilight fast approaching, he faced the setting sun, his palms held up to the sky. He hadn’t spoken for a very long time and doing so now, his voice sounded dry and strange to his ears. “Sky Father I have failed, I beg your forgiveness!”

Kneeling, he pressed his hands to the ground. “Earth Mother, I beg forgiveness. I have failed in my task…”

Rising, he turned his back to the sun and held his arms out wide. “Wind Spirits of the East, I beg forgiveness for this failure.” Turning, he croaked, “Wind Spirits of the South, I beg...”

He rasped his plea to the remaining directions and the spirits who dwelled there, and then addressed the mound and the body that lay within, “Aiyanna my love, my heart. I have watched over you through time but I can watch no longer. Please forgive me, I have failed you….” His throat choked close. Swallowing hard, he whispered to the earth that half-covered his wife, “Again.”
Kneeling beside the dirt-encrusted bones, he pulled the cover away to expose them fully. The small bones of the baby he knew laid with its mother had dissolved in the acids of the soil. Gently digging through the loam between the exposed rib bones, his fingers found the bird stone, its cord long since returned to the earth. Holding it now, he remembered...

Setting up the scene: Ash watches over his wife's burial mound. Today he finds her grave desecrated. Left with nothing and without purpose, this immortal shaman will decide he has no reason to live.

My 8:

His throat tightened as he walked amongst the tables and pails. A small bone caught his eye and he bent to pick it up. He stared a long while, seeing but not seeing the hand it belonged to so long ago. It was his task to watch over this resting place, and his task alone. Coming here later than usual today, there was nothing he could do to stop the white man’s destruction. His eyes filled with tears as his fist closed around the finger bone. Slumping to the ground, he sobbed in anguished sorrow.
There was no sense to this. ...

MFRW Authors Blog
It's Wednesday and I'm glad to be participating in the new Marketing for Romance Writers Books Hooks mini hop! (see linky list below) The deal is to post 6-8 sentences from your novel. This time I'm offering a bit more from my award-winning Victorian polyamorous romance written with an unusual touch of reader-interactive art history: The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo. (book 1 in the series ~ Ashkewheteasu)

Setting up the scene: His purpose gone, his solitude pointless, Ash begs the Manitou to let him die. Here he revisits the destruction of his wife's burial mound and suddenly wonders if other destroyed mounds had immortal guardians like him just hoping to die.

My 8:

He’d seen buildings go where other mounded graves had been. The thought made him pause.
Were there guardians at those graves, or were those mounds merely places of clan recognition? In his time, not all mounds in the earth were graves. In fact, most were made to celebrate the spirits of the place the clans dwelled in. He closed his eyes and saw them: otter mounds, bear mounds, and flying goose mounds for the Otter, Bear, and Goose clans. His people had belonged to the Bear clan — the people of the forests. Ayanna's people were the Otter clan the water people.

Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday, I'm participating in the Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished. This time I'm offering another bit from

Setting the scene:
Because the old legends have more than a little truth in them, John returns to the safety he knew as a child; the loving home of his aunt and uncle.

My Six:

Absalom RedLeaf heard the ravens burst from the trees. Something had disturbed their roost. “Always trust your raven brothers,” his grandfather had advised years ago, and it was true, the ravens would tell you if they saw something unusual. Hurrying to dress, he grabbed his shoes and shotgun and went out in his wool socks to stand on the porch. He leaned on the post and put on his shoes, all the while peering into early dawn.

Sure enough, there was a car coming up the long driveway. Obscured by trees, Abbie couldn’t make out the vehicle, and any unexpected visitor at this hour made him uneasy. After the incident at Edgar Nauzee’s house, Abbie had been feeling on edge. The old storyteller said the Spider lived, that their legend had come alive and tried to kill him. Unbeknownst to him at the time, that malevolent supernatural being had sat at his kitchen table and was given the hospitality due a guest. Abbie now knew the Spider was in fact Eli White. He pumped his shotgun. The Spider would get more than May’s cobbler if he returned here.

The car drew closer and recognizing it, his unease faded. He cracked the shotgun, to remove the shells and went inside to put the gun on its hooks over the mantle. He was back out on the porch by the time the car pulled up to the house. John and Cora, his niece by marriage, got out. Not bothering to tie his laces, Abbie shuffled forward to hug them both. “I am surprised, but so happy to see you!”

Feeling anxious and drained after driving all night, John gave his uncle a hearty hug. “Boozhoo Zhishay.”

It was good to be here. Uncle Abbie was a steady calming influence and the security of family was just what he and Cora needed right now. John felt almost as unsettled as he had when Children’s Services left him and his sister Fay — two frightened orphans — on this doorstep nearly thirty-five years before. They’d lost their mother to diabetes and then their father, Abbie’s younger brother Samuel, had been murdered right before their eyes in a case of mistaken identity.

There was good reason to be unsettled. Unbelievably Livie’s dog was actually Ashkewheteasu, the ancient immortal Medicine Man of legend. And in reality Ashkewheteasu was Ash, the man who’d helped calm animals at the clinic. After the shape-shifter had transformed himself from wolf-dog to a man right on John’s kitchen floor yesterday, Ash had explained that they were all in danger. He’d sent them to the reservation, where they’d be safe from the immortal madman his people knew by legend as the Spider Eluwilussit. Incredibly, John had met that very man here in his uncle’s house days ago. He went by the name Eli White now.
