National Grouch Day!

I'm sitting at my laptop first thing in the morning, fresh cup of coffee in hand. I'm participating in various things around the web today, including the International Blog Action Day on my main blog. I'm pretty good with time management when it comes to juggling the blogs. I created all the posts last night so posting this morning went quickly. I checked my email after, as I do each morning. I use yahoo mail. I could crab about that fact but I won't because something caught my eye on the front page of yahoo.According to Sesame Street Magazine, October 15 is National Grouch Day, "a day to celebrate (or uncelebrate) Grouches and their way of life."
I had no idea.

Creative people often draw their inspiration from life. Oscar the Grouch, that green Muppet who lives in a trash can on Sesame Street, had to come from somewhere. I found myself interested in what that spark was. Looking further into the holiday turned up some interesting trivia...

In the behind the scenes book Sesame Street Unpaved, it turns out Oscar the Grouch was inspired by an employee of a tavern in Manhattan called Oscar's Salt of the Sea. There, Jim Henson was waited on by a man who was so over-the-top grouchy that rather than be annoyed at his behavior,  Jim and his companions grew amused by it. So amused in fact, that going to Oscar's Tavern became their regular lunchtime entertainment. Before long, Oscar the Grouch came into being. And Jim Henson sketched him out on the tavern's paper placemats.

Caroll Spinney, the voice and human machine inside the Oscar Muppet says that he based Oscar's voice on  a Bronx taxi driver who drove him to work one day. The driver snapped gruffly, "Where to, Mac?"

How can anyone be grouchy knowing all this?  :)
