Flasher Fiction Friday

Because writing small is new to me and very good practice for that book of short stories I have in mind, I'm trying something new. It's called Flasher Fiction Friday. The idea is to post 100-word bit of flash fiction to go with the picture of the day. Somehow I placed this image
on the wrong meme and wrote a story for it. Sorry readers. So here it is, right picture on the right day and a new snippet of flash.

The power of the god’s arousal emanated through the grove. Knowing no woman could refuse Apollo, Daphne silently begged Gaia for help. Hiding, she tore some cloth from her hem. This she wrapped around a stone to throw as a ruse before she bolted. He grabbed her. Ardor high with intent to take her, Apollo kissed her savagely. But aid came at a price and Daphne transformed into a laurel tree. Saddened by her choice, Apollo kissed and caressed the nymph tenderly through the change. Plucking several leaves, he fashioned a crown and left her standing in her own shade.

The Rusalki*

An artwork of stylized kelp, sea creatures, and scales covered her wet skin, but these peeled away as she dried, each design dropping to the rock and water to become delicate living things.

Spying a mirror tangled in the wreckage, she plucked it from the flotsam. She had no memory to go with this pale face, save a dim recollection of experiencing pain as ice cold sea water entered her lungs. Nevertheless, she knew what she was. Rusalka drew fishermen to drowning deaths with mesmerizing song and hypnotic dances. A vessel neared. Filled with euphoria, her hips began to sway…

*In Slavic mythology, a rusalki is a mermaid-like demon that assumes the body of a young woman who has died in the water. They love to come on land and dance in the meadows, the sole purpose to lead hapless men to their death.

<<  This is lovely. Let's hope I do it justice.

Orion licked his lips and breathed the air of Crete discerningly, the moisture drawing scent to his nose. Artemis too smelled faint traces of deer, for she notched her arrow. Silently motioning to the goddess, they parted to circle the cypress grove. Little attention was paid to the butterfly flitting across his path. Then he saw another, and another. Soon the meadow filled with them. He smiled knowing the reason. Sure enough, he found the beautiful muse fast asleep. Even in her dreams Mneme composed the songs of nature with notes heart-achingly sweet. So sweet, the notes themselves took flight.
