Question: Eli's facial birthmark and his generally creepy personality have inspired this nickname.

Excerpt:
After a few well-placed questions, Eli was certain Old Edgar still lived alone and the house was dark, as he’d expected at this late hour. Eli quietly closed the crooked gate behind him. As soft as the sound of the latch catching was, it still spurred the chickens in the nearby hen house to cluck softly. He quietly climbed the porch stairs. Reaching for the door knob, his hand was stayed by the unmistakable sound of a match being struck. He turned to the sound and found Old Edgar sitting on a rocking chair, in the process of lighting his pipe. The old man had a shotgun laid across his lap, the barrel pointing squarely at him.

“What do you want?” Edgar dropped the match, and picked up the gun.

Taken aback, Eli blurted, “Edgar! I was worried about you. I thought I’d check to see if you were all right.”

“You come to my home in the middle of the night to see if I am all right?” Edgar rocked forward. “Why are you really here, Spider?”

The name caught Eli by surprise. He hadn’t heard that derogatory name in three thousand years. His eyes narrowed. “What’s that you called me, old man?”

“I remember you, Spider. I was a boy when you were last here, but I remember you. Forever forty, hey?”

“Are you saying you remember me as a boy? That’s absurd!” Eli waved him away. “You’re one crazy old man.”

The pipe flared as Edgar drew a puff. “You look the same as you did the last time I saw your spider face. No, you are the same man living a cursed life.”

Eli took a step closer. The porch light went on and another unmistakable sound came from just inside the open door. Edgar’s grandson Warren stepped onto the porch, a freshly chambered shotgun in his hands.

“It is not my place to kill you, Midewi. But at my word, another will,” Edgar said in no uncertain terms. “You’ve been recognized. We know you for what you are. Leave my land. Leave the reservation.”

Eli made no move to leave.

Taking a step forward, Warren hissed, “Holy man or not, I’ll fuckin’ shoot you dead right now. Get the hell out of here.”

Eli smiled at them both. He put his hands up, and walking backward said, “You’re both crazy you know that?” He spit on the landing. “You shouldn’t believe your childrens’ stories, Edgar.” On the bottom step, he turned and walked into the night, not bothering to latch the gate behind him. Warren followed some distance behind to make sure he drove away.

Feeling a little shaky, Edgar let out a breath and tapped his now-cold pipe ash over the railing. He’d immediately recognized the Spider across the fire that night. Though at first, disbelieving his old eyes, he took off his glasses to clean them before taking a second look. Sure enough, it was that cursed man sitting next to Tony Reed. And Edgar knew the Spider would try to kill him the moment he finished telling the story of Ashkewheteasu. There were many stories of the Spider Midewi. That there was an especially evil man.

Edgar smiled at Warren coming up the steps, the sliver of morning sun at the horizon behind him.

“Who was that creep, Grandpa?”

Edgar looked at his grandson – a Marine recently returned from Iraq who had stopped to pay an unexpected visit on his way north to see his sweetheart. Sky Father had placed his feet on this doorstep for a reason. Warren was here to guard against the Spider. Edgar replied, “Remember the story of Ashkewheteasu and the Spider?”

Having grown up in a family of storytellers, Warren was familiar with all the stories. The young man nodded.

“That was the Spider.”

Back in his car, Eluwilussit frowned. That didn’t go as he’d planned. His life had been comfortable here. And given the age of Edgar’s grandson, he couldn’t live here safely for at least sixty years. So one thing was certain: sometime in the next five years, he’d make sure that entire family of storytellers was dead and buried and with them that story. He hated being called Spider. Even as a child it filled him with rage.

But he’d planned on going south anyway. Sooner rather than later didn’t matter. He only had a few peyote buds left and needed to get more. Having discovered the Midewin uses of the plant nearly fifty years ago, he used it regularly though it was getting harder to acquire these days as this government considered it a substance to be controlled. No matter the laws that made it scarce, acquiring it was necessary. He felt himself getting closer to the Manitou each time he ingested the psychoactive cactus buttons. There were other herbs and potions that did the same, and he might have learned the methods from Nawkaw. Unfortunately, the old Medicine Man took secrets with him when he died.

Down the road, Eli pulled over and opened a map. Elk Horn was a long ways away and he had to make a few stops — home first, to gather his belongings, then to find a station to gas up, and after, he’d find a small motel to get some sleep. Not only disappointed that his midnight visit had gone poorly, he was tired. There was one thing that never changed in all the years he’d lived: No matter the amazing inventions that extended the day, when the sun went down, he grew sleepy.

An hour later, he filled the tank of his Lincoln Town Car. As the pump ticked away, he used the time to wipe the windows, his mind filled with the details of the last hour. When he’d gone home, a throng of men were waiting for him. Some had shotguns. Angry that he couldn’t retrieve his belongings and his money, Eli turned his car around and headed south, figuring he was bound to come to a road-side motel eventually. He was tired. Dog-tired. Digging in his pocket, he pulled out a ten dollar bill, six singles, some odd change, and his switch blade. The pump stopped at exactly $67.52. He went inside, and the gas station’s outdoor lights went black. Minutes later, he walked back to his car with a paper sack of assorted travel foods, bulging pockets of cash, and a two-liter bottle of ice-cold Pepsi.

Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday and time for the  Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished. Today, I'm offering a sampling from my back list ~ Dreamscape.

Written in homage to Agatha Christie,
Dreamscape is a haunting, a murder, a thriller, a mystery, a time-travel of sorts, and a love story that transcends time. Above all, this sensual tale is a reader's Easter egg hunt in the truest sense. Not everything is as it appears. Peppered throughout are little clues suggesting a story running behind the scenes. Finding them isn't necessary to the telling of the tale, just a fun twist in my writing. Can you find them all before the story ends? But more importantly, can a ghost find love among the living?

Setting the scene:
Jason haunts his house and ponders his death 120 years ago. One day a lovely stranger comes. It looks like she's moving in!

My Six:
He'd watched the pair as they walked around the grounds with pens and paper in hand presumably making notes for repairs. While assessing the pavers that lined his walkway, she looked up at his window curiously as if seeking something. Jason frowned. Did she see him standing there? How odd. He could only be seen when he wanted to. And he did not yet wish to be seen.

After the man had driven away in his automobile, the woman retrieved her bags from another smaller vehicle. He watched her come up the walkway. She glanced his way again and she was smiling.

Hmm.

Below, the front door opened and closed, so he headed there, curious about the woman who at this very moment was moving into his house. He was grateful for two things, the first being he'd no longer be alone with only an occasional mouse for company. The second, this young woman bore no resemblance to his beautiful, black-hearted wife.

He thought about her from time to time, his duplicitous wife Cathy, her lover Richard Mason, and his sister Bertha, his murderers. He spent many a night listening to their congratulatory recounting of how they'd set him up, duping him into marrying a woman who from the onset had a lover in the wings. Like the Masons, Cathy too was born and raised in the south at the time of reconstruction and was reared on tales of the glory days. Their sole purpose from the onset in taking his life was so she would inherit all.

When they met she had been such a sweet and shy little beauty, the shyness he later learned to be false. When she comforted him over the untimely death of his father, he'd been surprised by how quickly he fell head over heels for her. Though she'd never voiced it while he was alive, he was well aware of her desire to live in the affluent manner in which her parents and grandparents had lived before the war took it all away. To that end, seeking to win her timid heart and encourage the comfort that would eventually lead his wife into his bed, he gave into Cathy's every whim. No more than two months had passed before he was compelled to offer her marriage. No more than four before he found himself dead with his spirit walking the halls.

Sneak Peek Sunday!

It's Sunday and time for the  Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished.  I'm offering a bit from my legend-inspired romance ~ The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo
(book 1 Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the scene:
Believing his refusal to eat has to do with the clinic, Livie takes the recuperating dog home to see if a familiar environment would help. She has no idea this dog has never been in a house before. She also has no idea her patient isn't a dog. Here, Ash sees the inside of the white man's home for the first time. The TV is a surprise.

My Six:
Olivia was surprised when the wolf-cross pulled the leash out of her hand. More so when he picked it up and carried in his mouth as he haltingly paced up the walkway to her house. She’d seen excited dogs hold their leashes before but she got the strangest impression this dog just didn’t want to be led. She opened the door as he waited.
“After you. Let’s find some dinner, I’ll bet you’re hungry.”

Out of habit and loneliness, she picked up the TV remote and turned on the television for background noise. She stood a moment surfing through the channels. The news was too much to handle sometimes and reality TV too mean-spirited to enjoy. Settling upon a channel that played benign black-and-white TV series, she turned to her four-legged guest. “Go on. Go see what that nose can sniff out while I figure out what to feed you.”

Inside the house, Ash took a deep breath, his keen sense of smell in this form touching upon every detail of the place. This was her place. He struggled for the name he’d heard the man of the People use when addressing her. Livie. This was Livie’s home. He’d never been inside one of their structures before, though he’d often take the shape of a chipmunk or crow and draw near enough to listen to them. They’d changed much in the centuries they’d been here, these strange people. He watched them clear the land and build their villages, watched those villages change and the people with them. Their machines changed too, as did their animals. From beasts to pull their carts, to the machines that took their place, the white men seemed to always hurry. Hurry and destroy.

He’d watched them closely in the last fifty years, partly because there were so many now that lived a short distance from his cave, and partly because they’d changed as a people, and he didn’t understand why. They no longer seemed to care about anything around them. They’d sit outside their homes and cook their food without wood while their impolite children shrieked and splashed in what they referred to as a pool. They talked about things that seemed trivial to him but extremely important to them. On one level, he found them fascinating as he learned their language. His belly suddenly clenched as images of his wife’s defiled grave flashed before his eyes. On another level, he found them greedy beyond measure. Livie was not that way, nor was the small woman Jenni. They were extremely caring, even in the way they addressed one another.

Ash hadn’t notice she’d left the room. He stared at the noisy box in disbelief. People — many people — were inside the small box talking. Odder still, he heard the laughter of others and looked around, expecting to see them. He narrowed his eyes at the box. What is this thing? Suddenly, the people were colorful and louder. Too loud for his sensitive wolf ears. He took several steps back, watching as a boy dripped food on his chest. Then a woman, his mother presumably, took his clothing, and poured thick blue liquid on it. A moment later, the clothes were new.

Just as suddenly, a young woman held one of those voice boxes to her ear. It was nearly identical to the voice box Livie talked into earlier. Phone, she called it. Again the scene changed. Women wearing grass skirts danced to loud fast music and an enormous canoe moved swiftly over white-capped water. Ash looked down, expecting the floor to be wet, but it wasn’t. A man’s voice said, “Hawaii Five O, tonight at eight.”

Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday and time for the  Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished.  I'm offering a bit from Loving Leonardo (book 1 in the series)

Setting the scene:

Nicolas and Ellie invite Luca to discuss Leonardo da Vinci, and realize they have more than one interest in common. Here they discuss the artist's homosexuality and the return to the classical ideals of the ancients -- a popular theme in Da Vinci's era, regardless of the opposition of the church.

My Six:

I believe we were all aware of a sexual tension growing in the intellectual-rich loam. There were little things at play now: the way Ellie moistened her lips and looked at us with eyes that lingered from one to the other. The way Luca’s irises had darkened from snow shadow to moon shadow as he looked upon her. The way I’d catch myself with a reminder to breathe as my eye was drawn to these small distinctions. Like da Vinci’s sfumato, our mutual attraction hung in the air, and I was struck by the notion that the smoky quality depicted in his art was desire. Desire like this.

“Ah.” Ellie nodded in understanding and circled the rim of her wine glass with her fingertip. I could feel the gears turning in the perfect machine of her mind. She proved my estimation right when she laughed suddenly, “Why Signore Franco, I do believe you’ve evaded my original question.”

He touched his heart with mock surprise. “Would I do that?”

That made Ellie laugh just as she was about to sip her red wine, causing her to slosh it on her white silk blouse. “Fiddlesticks! Please excuse me gentlemen, I must see to this before it sets.” Giving us an adorable self-deprecating smile, she quickly excused herself. We watched her go and shortly after the tap ran in the bathroom.

To a man such as I who’d lived on the same side of the fence for so many years, Luca’s answer had been plain enough. There was a silent language men like us used in public that only those of the same persuasion might guess what lie below the surface. Society might speculate all it wished, but unless the intent was blatant, no one knew of it for certain. In a world of unfounded prejudice, discretion might save one’s life. Our eyes met. We knew.

He told me sincerely, “She’s a treasure. Your Ellie is unlike any woman of my acquaintance.”

Thursday Tasters

It's time for Thursday Tasters -- a creative meme for writers who want to show short excerpts of their work. Today I'm offering a the prologue from my award-winning Victorian polyamorous bi romance written with an unusual touch of reader-interactive art history ~ Loving Leonardo
(Book one in the Loving Leonardo series)

Prologue
Carlo Posateri shrugged his cloak back on his shoulders, the thin wool gone heavy from absorbing the September fog. He peered into the night then checked his pocket watch under the misty gaslight. Few people would be out in an evening fog like this and there was a word to describe many who were — Ladro. It was a perfect night to make deals with a thief.
The acquisition ritual played in his mind. To start: a warm bath and a brandy, followed by an excursion into the most brilliant and salacious mind ever produced by the Renaissance. He envisioned the sinful eroticism the book was certain to contain; the impression settled heavy in his loins. Salivating in anticipation, he swallowed. He wasn’t a sinner. His disdain for the sodomite artists didn’t mean he couldn’t enjoy their unique and compelling art. But he wasn’t one of them. He simply appreciated their artistic technique.
Born and raised in Rome, he’d planned to return after his Silvia died. But her older brother Pietro encouraged him to stay because without other family, they were all each of them had in the world. Though he liked Pietro well enough, familial ties weren’t incentive to remain. Rather, being his wealthy brother-in-law’s sole heir was. Beyond that, he had other reasons to stay in Venice. Outside Florence, old Venice drew deviants like a candle flame attracted moths. Then and now, the world had no place for such debauchery. The most depraved artworks could be found in the ports and once purchased, he’d destroyed many of them for the filth they were. A few pieces he’d keep to study.
His collection grew in the seat of Renaissance decadence; how fitting. Carlo often imagined living during that artistic age. Had he lived exactly four hundred years ago, he would have helped Girolamo Savonarola build the pyre for the Bonfire of the Vanities. Carlo licked his lips, seeing it in his mind’s eye: the pair of them feeding the flames with art and artist alike. A small lantern light maneuvered along the Grand Canal. Looking around him once more, he moved closer to the water.
Curiously, tonight’s meeting had been arranged by a different man. He’d received a note from one E. Fortuna describing several antique books in his employer’s possession, including one of homoerotic art reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s work. Quoting a price, Fortuna added he’d also contacted other potential buyers, no doubt to spur him to act quickly. But in the span of a day, a second note arrived. This one from Signore Falconetti, saying the book changed hands and was still for sale. What happened to E. Fortuna?
Carlo didn’t like dealing with Falconetti, though he had twice before. Both times he felt fortunate to leave with his life. The prospect of owning such a work, however, was too tempting to ignore. He looked around again to be sure this meeting was private, as Falconetti demanded. Falconetti had a reputation, and it wasn’t a good one. Men like this often found themselves employed by multiple clients, who would occasionally be at cross purposes with one another.
The small gondola bumped in the darkness and Carlo heard rather than saw the removal of the remo pulled from the forcola. The oar wouldn’t be in his way, for he had no intention of stepping into the man’s boat.
***
Without a doubt, Carlo Posateri knew the Heavenly Father watched over him. He ran his trembling fingers over the precious book’s leather and brass bindings. Beyond a doubt this was the pinnacle of his private collection. As soon as he had laid eyes upon Falconetti’s amazing offering, Carlo was driven to pay any price. Unfortunately the price had quadrupled, from E. Fortuna’s initial quote. He’d somehow managed to convince Falconetti to take what money he had with him by swearing he was good for the rest, and more. The dangerous man told him his life depended on that being true.
Doing the church’s work had made him as poor as a beggar in St. Peter’s Square — he simply didn’t have more money to give the man. As it was, his last maid would only be working until the end of the month. Carlo poured himself a brandy, his shaking hands sloshing the amber liquid onto his sleeve. It took both hands to hold the snifter still long enough to allow a fortifying sip. He must persuade his brother-in-law to lend him more money. He glowered into his glass. Experience told him this would prove difficult. Pietro frowned on Carlo’s sacred mission even though he knew the last Pope himself approved.
And now there’d be no time to ask him. Pietro was inopportunely traveling to London England for an appointment with an American diplomat regarding selling his raw fibers to the American textile markets. Awash in a mixture of elation and hopelessness, Carlo raked a hand over his sparse head of hair.
With no other option, he took up a pen and scribbled a quick note to his brother-in-law to say he wanted to go with him. Pietro had made the offer weeks ago; he’d no doubt be pleased. Carlo rang for the maid then wrote another note to Falconetti promising the money by mid-October at the latest. He hoped the delay wouldn’t matter, but just in case, this note would be delivered after he and Pietro sailed.
~*~
Calmer from his bath and double-shot brandy, Carlo Posateri fully appreciated his purchase. He couldn’t have imagined better; the sinful sketches in the book were enhanced by shockingly seductive prose. In full appreciation of the art, he found his release in the first four pages. Deciding he wouldn’t turn another page until his return, he sought a latch behind several leather-bound volumes on his shelf. The false front sprung open to reveal a secret recess with a stack of paintings and several old books. Compelling erotic vignettes lingering in his mind, Carlo placed da Vinci’s book with the rest.

Tantalizing Tuesday!

It's Tuesday and I'm taking part in Tantalizing Tuesday again. I'm having fun with it. The idea is to take a personal picture prompt and write a 200 word teaser for it.

<<  An evocative one that just begged for a teensy bit of Photoshop tweaking. I call it The Restless Wife*

This restlessness always came on her when the seasons changed and stirred an overwhelming urge to clean. To her, spring cleaning was more than housework. It was introspection. Yes, Steve was a loving husband who gave her a life she’d never envisioned for herself, but he didn’t understand the need to put one’s life in order. It was necessary to purge their home of things they didn’t use and never would. Life got so cluttered otherwise. Waiting for him to finish his breakfast, she glanced impatiently at the clock.

Later, at the door, he said, “If the haul is good, it’ll be herring for supper.
Have a nice day, honey.

Anxious to begin her housework the moment he left for the docks, it was all she could do to keep from pushing him out the door. She smiled. “You too.”

She happily cleaned all day, saving the cluttered bedroom closet for last. Determining Steve’s unused bowling ball had to go, she unzipped the bag and gasped to find what he’d concealed inside. She penned her husband a short goodbye note then quickly stripped naked. Gathering her spotted skin, she walked out the door to return to the vast uncluttered sea.

*This story is written around the ancient legend of Selkies -- those beings that live in the sea as seal-type creatures, and on land as human when they take off their spotted skins. The legend says if a man finds the skin and hides it away, the transformed Selkie would marry him and make a perfect wife, even giving him children. But...if one day she finds the hidden skin, she'll leave him and the children without looking back. If you like Selkies, my Enchanted Skye was inspired by a very real Scottish family who' has declared themselves Selkie for generations.

Sneak Peek Sunday

It's Sunday, I'm participating in the Sneak Peek Sunday mini hop! The deal is to post 6 paragraphs from a writing project, published or unpublished.
This time I'm offering another bit from
The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book1 in the saga) ~ A story about an ancient shaman in a modern world, inspired by history and a very creepy urban legend. Follow the links below to a free chapter sampling and the local legend that just begged me to write it.

Setting the stage: Finding his wife's burial mound desecrated, Ash is consumed by guilt.

My Six:
There was no sense to this. What kind of people disturb the dead? Couldn’t they see this was sacred ground, a resting place? Composing himself, he wiped the tears from his eyes before reverently setting the small bone back in the opened mound.

Twilight fast approaching, he faced the setting sun, his palms held up to the sky. He hadn’t spoken for a very long time and doing so now, his voice sounded dry and strange to his ears. “Sky Father I have failed, I beg your forgiveness!”

Kneeling, he pressed his hands to the ground. “Earth Mother, I beg forgiveness. I have failed in my task…”

Rising, he turned his back to the sun and held his arms out wide. “Wind Spirits of the East, I beg forgiveness for this failure.” Turning, he croaked, “Wind Spirits of the South, I beg...”

He rasped his plea to the remaining directions and the spirits who dwelled there, and then addressed the mound and the body that lay within, “Aiyanna my love, my heart.
